BHS Senior Michael Landy Named to All-National Concert Band

Bronxville High School senior Michael Landy has been selected as a member of the 2016 All-National Honor Ensembles Concert Band, which will perform in Grapevine, Texas, Nov. 13.

Landy, who plays oboe, is among the most talented high school students nationwide who will perform under the baton of leaders in the field of music education. He is one of 150 instrumentalists from across the U.S. and its overseas military bases to play in the concert band.

The concert program, which is sponsored by the National Association for Music Education, will also include performances by a 20-piece jazz ensemble and a mixed chorus of 350 vocalists. Performers are high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who have qualified for state-level honor ensembles and who competed through video auditions for all-national recognition. Landy was a member of the 2015 New York State Symphonic Band.
Sharon Slote, a former director of the Bronxville Middle School and Bronxville High School bands who taught Landy for nearly a decade, described him as an excellent musician and oboist.

“Michael’s playing has a mature tone quality and a nice vibrato,” she said. “He plays with technical proficiency and appropriate musical styles for each piece. His strong practice ethic and methodical preparation has led to a steady increase of technical and musical skills through the years. Michael is an asset to any musical ensemble and his acceptance into the All-National Concert Band is a testament to his musical strength.”

Landy is a member of the Bronxville High School Band and Westchester Band, which gives outdoor summer performances in Scarsdale. Outside of school, he has been a student of Alan Hollander, an oboist and adjunct professor of music at Lehman College, since the fourth grade. He has been a long-time piano student at Concordia Conservatory as well, where he has also studied percussion since the eighth grade.

Landy’s brother, Christopher Landy, a Bronxville High School Class of 2014 graduate, was a 2013 All-National Honor Choir member and a winner of the NAfME’s 2014 Student Composers Competition. Now a junior in a dual degree program at Northwestern University, Christopher is a music composition major in the Bienen School of Music and a radio/television/film major in the School of Communication.
