Bronxville High School Students Take a Stand for National History Day

Forty-eight Bronxville High School freshmen and sophomores, who conducted extensive historical research over several months, have advanced to the Lower Hudson Valley Regional National History Day Competition, which will be held on March 11. They advanced after being named winners in one of several categories at the schoolwide competition, held on Feb. 1.

The students’ authentic work focused on this year’s National History Day theme of “Taking a Stand” and is displayed in one of five ways – paper, website, documentary, performance or exhibit. As part of their research, which allowed them to further explore their interest in a specific topic, many of them contacted experts in the field, analyzed the evidence and data they collected and developed theses that addressed the theme.

"I appreciate that National History Day instills in students the research skills that they can bring into all other areas of their life,” social studies teacher Christina Reidel said. “Knowing how to ascertain the reliability of evidence, analyze competing perspectives and communicate powerfully are central to this work."

At the regional competition, the students will be interviewed by professors and scholars and articulate what they’ve discovered through their historical research. Winners in that competition will advance to the state competition and ultimately to the national finals.
