Eighth-Graders Celebrate Achievements During Moving Up Ceremony

Eighth-graders at Bronxville Middle School celebrated the culmination of their hard work over the last three years during a special moving up ceremony on June 21. The students took to the stage and smiled before an audience of friends, family and administrators before accepting their certificates.

The evening featured music provided by music teacher Claire Stancarone and the seventh-grade orchestra, as well as a special recognition of Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Quattrone, who is retiring this year after 12 years of service to the school and community. Select student representatives Timothy Atkeson, Rory Christian, Artemas Radik, Sophia Sheumack, Teddy Wardell and Avery Widen addressed their classmates and reflected on their experiences in middle school.

“I understand what distinguishes this school from another,” Christian said. “The people who make up this school live and breathe the Bronxville Promise. The Bronxville Promise is the district’s guiding vision to develop the belief in every teacher and administrator that all students can be successful. […] My middle school teachers have encouraged me to take leadership roles, coached me through tough projects and assignments and believed in my success.”

The students also spoke about recognizing opportunity, dealing with failure, accepting challenges, recognizing anxiety, preparing for the future and growing along the way, and assured their peers that they’re ready to take on the next challenges in their educational journey as high school freshmen in September.

“Middle school has given us a great foundation to continue learning what we like to do, who we enjoy being around and who we want to be,” Widen told her peers. “One goal I ask us all is to strive for in high school is finding what is important to us, and to undertake tasks that cultivate your interests.”

Principal Dr. Thomas Wilson welcomed the guests and encouraged the Class of 2021 to always work hard and persevere through any obstacle life may present to them.

“As you move to high school you will further refine your skills and you’ll have many more defining moments and likely fewer fumbles,” Dr. Wilson said. “What lies ahead is really exciting if you rise to meet new challenges and remain open to trying new things. My wish for each of you is that you continually find ways to make a positive mark in the world and that you enjoy yourself immensely in the process.”

Signifying the conclusion of one chapter and the beginning of another, the students were called one by one to accept their certificates. Following the ceremony, the seventh-grade class hosted a reception for the graduates and their families.
