Fifth-Graders Examine Our Nation’s Living Document

Bronxville Elementary School fifth-graders are studying the topics of liberty and its importance in forming the United States by examining the U.S. Constitution and discussing how it has evolved over time to address the needs of a changing society.

In preparation for their upcoming trip to Philadelphia, where they will visit historic sites and museums, the students began an in-depth study of the Constitution with the launch of “Museum Monday” on Oct. 17. The program prepared students for their visit to the National Constitution Center, a core component of their trip to Philadelphia, which focuses on the importance of the U.S. Constitution.

Through a series of lessons and hands-on educational activities, the students examined the Preamble of the Constitution and discussed information about the forefathers who helped create and sign it, as well as the importance of preserving liberty and human rights.

Victoria, a student in Sarah Zonenshine’s class, said that learning about the Constitution and the people who signed the supreme law of the United States before going to Philadelphia will make her trip more meaningful.

“[The Constitution] has good rules to keep our country safe and clean, and it has rules for people,” she said. “It has ways to make the country a better place.”

As part of their trip, the students will see firsthand where the founding fathers worked to create our nation and will tour the Benjamin Franklin House, Benjamin Franklin Museum, National Liberty Museum, National Constitution Center, Independence Hall and Liberty Bell Center.

When they return from their trip, the fifth-graders will engage in project-based learning experiences to further examine the history behind the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, the process of changing or adding new amendments, and discuss how they too can make a difference in the world as engaged citizens.
