Freshmen, Seniors Bond Over Trip to Sharpe Reservation

Bronxville High School ninth-graders and 59 seniors, who are members of the Freshman Transition Leaders program, took a trip to the Fresh Air Fund’s Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill on Oct. 2 for a day of outdoor team-building activities.

The students collaborated on a number of outdoor activities, including mental and physical challenges, which were designed to improve their problem-solving and communications skills, and serve as a bonding experience. As they worked together to achieve their group’s common goal, the students displayed innovation and leadership skills, which are skills closely aligned with the dispositions of the Bronxville Promise.

“This was the best year in terms of involvement of leaders and group members,” said Anne Abbatecola, counseling department director. “The dedication of the seniors made a difference. They have developed a deeper sense of their mission to assist the freshmen, and they take their roles seriously and feel valued as a result.”

Twelve faculty members accompanied the group of students and enjoyed a barbecue lunch in the Camp Tommy Dining Hall.

“They had a great day watching their students get involved in community-building activities and truly enjoying the day together,” Abbatecola said.

Throughout the fall, the students will hold regular meetings between small groups of freshmen and senior leaders to continue to build a sense of community. Their next meeting will feature a presentation by high school teacher Bill Meyer, who will discuss organization and study skills. Students will also have the opportunity to share individual tips for academic success.
