Kindergartners Celebrate Accomplishments as Young Readers

Kindergartners – who have been reading storybooks, taking on character voices and finding words or phrases that repeat in their books – celebrated their accomplishments as young readers with a Reading Celebration Parade on Nov. 7.

With their favorite storybooks in hand, they walked down the first-grade hallway to the theme song of “Rocky” in the background, while their older peers held encouraging signs that read “kindergarten readers are awesome” and “reading rocks.” The parade concluded in the multipurpose room where Principal Tricia Murray treated the students to a reading of one of her favorite Old Storybooks, “Knuffle Bunny” by Mo Willems.

The parade was the culminating activity in the kindergarten classes’ first reading unit, called We Are Readers. The students read non-fiction, Learn About the World books and Old Storybook favorites, such as “Three Billy Goats Gruff,” “The Carrot Seed,” “Caps for Sale” and “Mrs. Wishy-Washy.”

“The children have been reading these books over and over again,” teacher Gail Mathias said. “They had fun reading them with a reading partner and helping one another to read, and they also acted out the stories to reinforce the sequence of events.”
