Michael Landy, BHS Senior, Named to 2017 All-Eastern Band

Oboist Michael Landy, a Bronxville High School senior, was named to the 2017 All-Eastern Band. The announcement came from the Eastern Division of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), which includes associations of school music educators in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Washington, D.C., as well as Europe. Over 850 students gathered for rehearsals beginning April 5 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the NAfME Eastern Division Biennial Conference. Performances by the five 2017 honors ensembles took place on April 7 and 8 in the Atlantic City Convention Center and in the Adrian Phillips Ballroom in historic Ballroom Hall.

Landy has capped a distinguished career as a high school instrumentalist with selection for honors ensembles at all levels sponsored by professional organizations of American school music teachers: All-County, Area All-State, All-State, All-Eastern, and All-National, the first Bronxville High School instrumentalist to be selected for the latter. In Atlantic City, he joined 150 other members of the All-Eastern Band in a concert program that also included performances by a Symphony Orchestra of 150, a Jazz Ensemble of eighteen, a Treble Chorus of 120, and a Mixed Chorus of 350. Performers were high school juniors and seniors who had qualified for state-level honor ensembles and were then selected by a special committee of NAfME members.

The All-Eastern Band was conducted by Dennis Fisher, Professor of Music in Conducting and Ensembles, associate director of wind studies, and conductor of the Symphonic Band at the University of North Texas, where he has been a faculty member since 1982. His wide range of conducting experiences spans 32 states and many foreign nations, including Russia, where since 2006 he has served as principal guest conductor of the Volga Band, a professional wind band in Saratov. In 2008, he was awarded the Gagarin Medal of Honor from the Society of Cosmonauts for service to the Russian Federal Space Agency.

Landy has been a private student of oboist Alan Hollander, adjunct professor of music at Lehman College, since the fourth grade. He is a member of the Bronxville High School Band and of the Westchester Band, which gives outdoor summer performances in Scarsdale.

Landy’s music studies are not limited to the oboe. Since kindergarten, he has been a piano student of Stephanie Ho at Concordia Conservatory in Bronxville, where he has also studied percussion with Yousif Sheronick. He has completed the AP Music Theory course taught by Dr. Denise Lutter at Bronxville High School.

Landy’s brother, Christopher Landy, BHS ’14, was a 2013 All-National Honor Choir member and a winner of the NAfME’s 2014 Student Composers Competition. Now a junior in a dual degree program at Northwestern University, he is a music composition major in the Bienen School of Music and a radio/television/film major in the School of Communication.
