Bronxville Middle School hosts book talk on Middle School Matters

A cozy and inviting bookstore setting, with a group of people gathered around tables engaged in conversation or study, surrounded by bookshelves and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Bronxville Middle School recently hosted a book talk for students and families centered on Middle School Matters by author and school counselor Phyllis Fagell. The session was designed to support families in navigating the academic, social and emotional transitions of middle school years.

The event was led by Bronxville Middle School Guidance Counselors Tim Nelson and Samantha Mazo, along with School Psychologist Jillian Tomlin. Together, they shared practical strategies drawn from Fagell’s work and facilitated discussion focused on helping students move from “surviving” to “thriving” during the tween years.
The presentation highlighted three overarching themes explored in the books: building a strong sense of self, navigating the social landscape, and preparing for the future. Counselors emphasized that middle school is a critical period of growth and opportunity, and that supporting students’ emotional development alongside academic learning helps lay the foundation for long-term success.

Through examples and guided conversation, families were introduced to tools for fostering resilience, encouraging self-advocacy, managing anxiety, and strengthening communication between students and trusted adults. The session also underscored the importance of meeting students where they are developmentally and emotionally as they learn to manage increasing independence and responsibility.

The book talk served as a preview of an upcoming community event as Bronxville Middle School looks forward to welcoming Phyllis Fagell for an author talk on February 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. The follow-up event, presented by The Bronville PTA, will provide families with the opportunity to hear directly from the author and continue the conversation around supporting middle school students.
