Bronxville Science Olympiad Students Earn Honors at Regional Competition

A group of 13 students from Bronxville Middle School participated in the Science Olympiad Lower Hudson Valley Regional Tournament at Scarsdale Middle School on March 7. They competed against students from across the region in different hands-on building and study events.

Science teachers and team advisers Daniel Tocci and Jennifer Zopp said their students have been preparing for the STEM-based competition since the fall, honing their skills in various disciplines, including biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and engineering.

In one of the events, the Scrambler, the students were challenged to design, build and test a mechanical device, which uses the energy from a falling mass to transport an egg along a track as quickly as possible without breaking the egg. In another event, the Solar System, participants demonstrated their knowledge of planet formation and structure within and beyond the Solar System.

As a result of their performance, seventh grader Tori Medler and eighth grader Ariel Agrawal earned fifth place in the Scrambler event; eighth graders Anders Widen and Lucas Gonzalez-Asturias earned fourth place in the Scrambler event, and eighth grader Michael Girimonti earned fifth place in the Solar System event.

Members of this year’s Science Olympiad club include eighth graders Ariel Agrawal, Charlie Allen, Maeve Celis, Michael Girimonti, Lucas Gonzalez-Asturias, Caitlin Holbert, Sophie Kaloz, Luca Maggio, Fergus Olwell, Evan Villoch and Anders Widen; seventh grader Tori Medler and sixth grader Dominic D’Amato.
