Bronxville Students Explore Dolphin Communication at Rockefeller University

Bronxville High School students recently participated in a Talking Science field trip to Rockefeller University, where they had an opportunity to engage with cutting edge scientific research and learn directly from researchers in the field.

During the visit, students attended a research talk by Dr. Marcelo Magnasco, who shared his work on dolphin communication. The presentation explored how dolphins communicate, their potential ability to create art, and what these behaviors suggest about intelligence and conservation efforts. Students were highly engaged and eager to learn more about how scientific research helps us better understand the natural world.

Following the research talk, students met with graduate students at Rockefeller University to discuss their work and learn about their academic journeys. These conversations provided valuable insight into pathways in science and what pursuing research as the graduate level can look like.

The field trip offered a meaningful extension of classroom learning, allowing students to ask thoughtful questions, explore real world applications of science, and experience learning in an authentic research setting. Experiences like this reflect The Bronxville School’s commitment to fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of learning beyond the classroom.
