Fifth Graders Celebrate Moving-Up Milestone

Bronxville Elementary School fifth graders celebrated their academic accomplishments during a moving-up ceremony on June 16. Marking an important milestone in their educational journey, the students were praised for being leaders, collaborators and innovative thinkers. 
 
Assistant Principal Michelle Tween welcomed the students and guests before fifth grade student representatives led the Pledge of Allegiance. The ceremony continued with the performance of the “Bronxville Song,” led by music teacher Marina Brown, as well as a fifth grade art project dedication. Tween reflected on her first year at Bronxville and expressed joy in being able to celebrate the milestone with the students, having met some of them while serving as a preschool director. 

“Since my first day, I have been embraced by our committed teachers, encouraging families, and a student body that radiates curiosity, energy, and resolve,” she said. “Above all else, there is a profound sense of belonging here – an intangible feeling that Bronxville is truly home.”

Interim Principal Adrienne Laitman addressed the students and families, sharing heartfelt reflections about the Class of 2033. She used the writing of the U.S. Constitution as an example of perseverance and compromise, connecting those lessons to the fifth graders’ experiences during the school year. The students organized several drives to support others, encouraged classmates to care for the environment, and created new opportunities for their peers, including launching a radio station and establishing lacrosse at recess.

“These initiatives remind us that leadership often begins with a simple idea and the drive to make it happen,” Laitman said. “Throughout your time at Bronxville Elementary School, you have been encouraged to be leaders and engaged citizens, to think critically, to innovate, and to create a community where everyone, every single individual, feels a sense of belonging. What has been remarkable to witness this year is the way you have demonstrated each of these qualities – through your words, your actions and, most importantly, your commitment to one another.” 

Throughout her remarks, Laitman emphasized that meaningful progress is achieved when people work together, listen to one another and remain committed to a common purpose.

“As you move forward into new experiences and opportunities, we know you will continue to let your voices be heard, advocate for your ideas, embrace compromise when needed, and be the change you wish to see in the world,” Laitman told the graduates. 

The ceremony concluded with the fifth graders performing Bruno Mars’ “Count on Me” and closing remarks by Tween. 

“While today marks the end of one chapter, it is also the beginning of an exciting new one,” Tween addressed the fifth graders. “Embrace every opportunity that awaits you and know how proud we are of each of you.”
