Fifth Graders Explore History in Philadelphia

Bronxville Elementary School fifth graders recently visited Philadelphia for an overnight field trip that brought history to life through visits to some of the city’s most significant landmarks and museums.

The students’ itinerary was filled with engaging experiences, including visits to the Liberty Museum, the National Constitution Center, where they attended the inspiring Freedom Rising performance, and the Franklin Institute. The adventure continued with a double-decker night tour that included a fun stop to run up the city’s famous Rocky Steps.

The trip complemented the fifth graders’ current social studies unit, U.S Constitution –– We the People. Throughout their visit, students examined questions such as “How did the constitution evolve to meet the needs of Americans over time?” and “How must governing documents evolve to meet the needs of the students today?”

“This trip brings our classes closer together while bringing the social studies curriculum to life, and it offers so many additional learning opportunities,” said fifth-grade teachers Sara Williams (Payne) and Lauren Geremia, who organized the trip.

Students also reflected on the experience. Fifth grader Milo Pomerantz said his favorite part was visiting the Franklin Institute. “What I think I’ll remember most was our last day there,” he said. “There were so many interactive activities that were a lot of fun.”

Classmate Max Dordevic added that he enjoyed the wide range of experiences the trip offered. “My overall experience in Philly was amazing,” he said. “I liked all of the exciting things, such as the double-decker bus, the Franklin Institute and the Freedom Rising show. It was really fun.”

The Philadelphia trip gave students the opportunity to see history come alive beyond the classroom while strengthening their understanding of the Constitution and the world it continues to shape today.
