Students Deepen Understanding of Memorial Day

Bronxville High School students participated in the “Lest We Forget: A Memorial Day Gallery Event,” an immersive and interactive program designed to deepen their understanding of service, sacrifice and remembrance through primary sources and reflection.

The event opened with remarks from military historian and archivist Mitch Yockelson, who shared inspiring stories of remembrance and discussed the significance of Memorial Day, as well as its connection to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. Following the introduction, the students explored a series of themed stations, each focused on a different aspect of remembrance, including the meaning of Memorial Day, historical maps and primary sources, Bronxville’s local history, the nation’s 250th anniversary, and the interpretation of wartime photographs and propaganda.

Juliette McEnroe, who organized the event, said the experience created an engaging educational environment that encouraged students to interact directly with history rather than simply observe it.

“Students moved through the gallery completing guided note sheets, asking thoughtful questions, and participating in discussions with organizers and faculty members stationed throughout the exhibit,” McEnroe said. “The combination of visual materials, primary sources and personal reflection allowed students to connect historical events to broader themes of remembrance and national identity. Through extensive planning, organization and preparation, the gallery transformed Memorial Day into a meaningful learning experience that left a strong impression on both students and staff.”

McEnroe said she was grateful for the opportunity to create the experience for her peers, noting that the interactive format encouraged the students to engage with the material and connect with it in a deeper and more meaningful way.

“It was incredibly rewarding to share the importance of this day and its history with my classmates, and I am especially thankful to Mrs. [Dana] Landesman for being such an amazing adviser and teammate throughout the entire process,” McEnroe said.
