Students Lead Annual Bronx River Cleanup

Students from Bronxville Middle School and Bronxville High School recently participated in a cleanup of the Bronx River, working to improve and protect the health of the local ecosystem.

During the event, the students removed large debris from the river, including tires, a shopping cart, wheels, and an old radio – items that can disrupt habitats and contribute to pollution in the river. As part of the ongoing initiative, members of the high school’s Bronx River and AP Environmental classes joined seventh grade middle school science students to continue efforts focused on invasive species removal and river cleanup initiatives.

“Service learning is a big part of Bronx River Research and an integral part of the Bronxville Promise,” science teacher Stephen Kovari said. “In Bronx River Research, we regularly clean our local river and outdoor laboratory and have removed dozens of tires and other large items.

This directly connects to students' understanding of stream flow, runoff, and pollution, while also providing a hands-on opportunity to involve the community in improving our natural spaces.”

Kovari said that including middle school students helps strengthen the vertical alignment of the K-12 Bronx River Research program.
