2018-2019 Course Catalog

December 2017

Dear Bronxville High School Students and Parents,

When we return from December Break, Guidance Counselors will begin to meet with students to choose courses for the 2018-2019 school year.  They will start with the current Junior class.  Please note that the 2018-2019 Course Catalog is now available on the high school website under ‘Students’ and a link for it is here.  We have a few new processes that will take place this year to aid students and parents in the course selection process.

Grade Level Meetings

Each grade level will have a meeting with Guidance and Curriculum Leaders.  The purpose of the meeting is to review the courses available to students in a particular grade for the following year.  At the meeting, course expectations for advanced courses, such as APs, will be discussed.  Students will hear about electives as well as new courses (see below).  The presentation that is given to students will be shared with parents following the meeting.  The meeting for the current Junior class will take place on Friday, January 5, 2018.  We will follow up after break with the timing of the assembly.

Online Course Registration

This year we will move to online course registration.  Prior to the student/parent meeting with your Guidance Counselor, you will go onto the Portal and choose the courses you would like to request.  You will see on the screen where course requests are made any recommendations from current teachers, based upon your performance in their class up to this point.  Your meeting with Guidance will clarify your requests but you should go online to make these requests prior to the meeting.  Online course requests will open on January 5, 2018 for all Juniors.  The process will be explained in detail at the grade level meetings.

New Courses for the 2018-2019 School Year

The following course offerings are new or updated.  We will be offering four new electives.  First, the World Languages department will offer two semester electives; The Great Thinkers and Comparative Mythology.  We will be replacing TV Production and Media with a new elective, Bronco TV.  This will be a semester elective though students can choose to take it both semesters.  We will also be offering the new Advanced Placement Computer Science course, AP Computer Science Principles, next year.  It was in the pilot phase this year.  Finally, Speech and Debate will run yearly rather than in alternate years.  Please see the course catalog for details about each course.  We also offer an option to take an online course through our collaboration with OC21, a consortium of Westchester schools.  The courses that were offered this year are located in the catalog and include exciting electives such as Anthropology, Geology and Paleontology as well as Beyond Mindfulness, taught by our own Mr. Meyer.  We will update the list as we learn about which courses will be offered next year.

If you have any questions about these updates to the scheduling process, please contact your Guidance Counselor.  We hope that this letter is helpful as you begin to plan your courses for the 2018-2019 school year.  More information will be shared with students at the grade level meetings which will take place during the winter months and will begin with the Junior class meeting on January 5, 2018.

Have a safe and restful break.  We will see you in 2018!

Sincerely,

Ann Meyer

High School Principal
