Students In Class Speaking Virtually To Authors
Bronxville, NY

Kindergartners through fifth graders connected with children’s book author Bruce Hale during virtual author visits on Nov. 2 and Nov. 10. During his visits, he read his book “Big Bad Baby” to students in grades K-2 and “Switched” to students in grades 3-5.

“The biggest takeaway for students was how inspirational the author was,” Assistant Principal Rakiya Adams said. “They learned that the author was once a student just like them, who didn’t always like to read, but he found a book he loved and that changed the course of his life. Many students shared that they felt inspired to become writers.”

During the visits, the students learned about the author’s craft and process in writing and illustration. They also asked him questions and participated in a draw-along component, guided by the author.

"It gave our students an opportunity to see that with hard work and determination they can reach their potential and make their dreams come true,” Principal Joseph Mercora said.

The program was supported through the Lecture Series PTA committee, which also generously provided each teacher with a packet of Bruce Hale’s books.
