Bronxville High School sophomore Esther Devitt and freshman Michael Randall – who had been advocating for gun violence prevention through their student-led New Yorkers Rise Up organization – recently joined New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on a press tour.
Chosen for their civic engagement and for having proven themselves as leaders in their local community who advocate for change, Devitt and Randall accompanied Gov. Cuomo during his tour to several high schools on Long Island on June 11, where he held press conferences.
“The governor pushed for the ‘Extreme Risk Protection Order,’ a piece of gun reform legislation currently pending in the New York State Senate,” Randall said. “This experience was truly amazing, and we were honored to be able to join [Gov. Cuomo] and push for this legislation that is so important to enforcing common sense gun control.”
If enacted, the Extreme Risk Protection Order would allow educators, family members and law enforcement officials to petition a judge to order the temporary removal of guns from homes of individuals who may present a danger to others or themselves.
