Eighth Graders Inspire a Love for Reading in Second Grade Students

Eighth Graders Inspire a Love for Reading in Second Grade Students
Bronxville, NY

A group of dedicated eighth graders brought joy to second graders during a special reading event on Feb. 11. With enthusiasm and a commitment to service, the middle school students carefully selected books they were excited to share, bringing stories to life for the eager elementary school listeners during story time.

The initiative stemmed from eighth grade adviser Connor Mitchell, who encouraged his students to brainstorm ways they could make a meaningful impact on their community. One idea stood out – sharing their love of reading with younger students.

Mitchell collaborated with Alyssa Dioguardi, dean of service learning and community engagement, to create the Service Learning club and second grade curriculum leader Justine Rutherford to turn the vision into reality. The community engagement project fostered a love for reading among the younger students and empowered the eighth graders as role models.

Special thanks to the following eighth graders who participated in the project: Juliet Bruno, Anthony D'Amato, Bella Ferraro, Beatrice Hogue, Nakita Pavlova, Connor Smith, David Torres and Adele Zichello.
