A group of talented Bronxville High School students has been invited to perform with the prestigious New York State School Music Association’s 2023 Area All-State and All-State ensembles on Nov. 4-5 and Dec. 3.
Performing at the Area All-State concerts are sophomore Sam Bright (bass) and senior Ria Mueller (cello) with the string orchestra; senior Simos Dimas (violin) with the symphony orchestra; sophomore Tiantong Wang (oboe) with the orchestra; and junior Madeleine Brandes (alto) with the mixed chorus.
“It is a significant accomplishment to be selected to participate in an Area All-State music ensemble,” Uma Karkala, middle and high school band director, said. “It affords students the opportunity to perform challenging works under the direction of exceptional conductors.”
The students were chosen based on auditions at last spring’s New York State School Music Association Solo Festival. During the audition, they sight-read, play scales and perform a solo from NYSSMA’s most challenging Level Six repertoire. The highest-scoring students at the festival are invited to participate in the Area All-State music ensembles.
The Area All-State orchestra concert will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4, and the chorus concert on Sunday, Nov. 5, in New Rochelle, New York.
In addition, Brandes is among an elite group of students to perform at NYSSMA’s All-State Winter Conference on Dec. 3. Out of more than 6,500 students from across the state who auditioned, only 600 students were selected to perform in one of five performing groups at the annual concert.
“Madeleine has beautiful tone and musicality,” Pamela Simpson, middle and high school chorus director, said. “Her commitment to developing her musicianship is seen not only in chorus class but also in her perseverance in last year’s Advanced Placement music theory class. Madeleine’s resoluteness earned her the highest score on the AP exam. In addition, she is an accomplished songwriter and performs her songs at open-mic nights and the solo recitals.”
The All-State Winter Conference will be held at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York, on Dec. 3.
