A group of talented Bronxville High School freshmen and sophomores – who conducted extensive historical research on a topic of their choice – were named winners in one of several categories at the Bronxville History Day Competition on Feb. 5. Their authentic work focused on this year’s theme of “Rights and Responsibilities in History.”
“I am so proud of all of our ninth and tenth grade students,” said teacher Dana Landesman, who oversees the program with Chris Doyle, Eva Gambino, Patrick Henderson and Martin Patmos. “I would like to thank the K-12 teachers and our administration for participating in our Bronxville History Day and providing students with feedback on their projects. I would also like to thank the Bronxville School Foundation for all of their support for the National History Day Program.”
Doyle said the documentaries that students create continue to increase each year, and their ability to tell stories and use different editing programs has grown. Gambino expressed pride in the students’ hard work and effort. Henderson expressed he was impressed by the students’ work, level of thoughtfulness and depth of research. Patmos described how gratifying it is to watch the students learn and grow throughout the process while continually surprising teachers with the directions they take their research in and the creativity they bring to their projects.
As a result of their outstanding work, the students have advanced to the 2025 Lower Hudson Valley History Day Competition, which will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas College on March 29. At the regional competition, they will be interviewed by professors and scholars and articulate what they’ve discovered through their historical research, which is displayed in either paper, website, documentary, performance or exhibit. Winners in that competition will advance to the state competition and ultimately to the national finals.
