Bronxville Elementary School kindergarten through fifth grade students were treated to a special virtual visit with children’s author Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrator Brian Pinkney on Jan. 8. The award-winning team discussed their creative process and provided a “behind-the-book” journey through readings, music and a unique look into the book making process.
“Our hope is that this author visit taught the students that every writer and artist has a process that is unique to them, and they use their passions and the world around them as inspiration,” Principal Tricia Murray said. “The ideas and themes that they write about serve as windows and mirrors for children everywhere.”
The Pinkneys have published more than 70 children’s books that have received the highest awards and accolades, including Caldecott Honors, Coretta Scott King Honors, four NAACP Image Award nominations, the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Award and the Regina Medal, among others.
The virtual author visit was generously sponsored by the PTA’s Lecture Series Committee, which is comprised of parent volunteers. In preparation for the visit, the PTA provided grade-appropriate books by the Pinkneys to each classroom in the elementary school.
