Bronxville Middle School seventh graders demonstrated their commitment to community by wrapping more than 120 gifts for the children of the Graham Windham School in Hastings-on-Hudson. In keeping with a longstanding tradition, the students earned money to purchase the items from a wish list, which they wrapped during their advisory classes on Dec. 13 and Dec. 18.
Daniel Tocci, a science teacher and seventh grade adviser, said the students earned the money by doing chores at home. Once they collected enough money, the students purchased the gifts, ranging from stuffed animals and games to sporting equipment and building blocks.
Seventh grader Sarah Nazari, who contributed by washing dishes to earn money for the gifts, expressed that it was nice to give to people. Anthony D’Amato, another seventh grader who is actively engaged in volunteer organizations, said the experience made him feel good about giving to others.
“It feels good to know that my time and money has gone to something productive,” D’Amato said. “If you can give your time, give it, it’s worth it.”
Beyond the act of giving, the program provides students with a meaningful experience and raises awareness about the importance of supporting others who are less fortunate.
