Bronxville, NY

Bronxville High School senior Alex Rizzo – one of the top runners in the nation – was recognized for his athletic and academic achievements and named Con Edison’s Westchester Scholar Athlete of the Week. He was selected by a panel of athletic directors and coaches on March 13.

Rizzo is captain of the varsity winter track and fall cross-country teams. Most recently, he competed in the national championships at The Armory in Manhattan, where he finished eighth in the 800-meter run and was a member of the national champion sprint medley relay team. He is also the Section 1 one-mile state champion and recipient of the Section 1 Sportsmanship Award. In addition, he is one of the top runners in the nation – ranked seventh in the 1,000-meter run and seventh in the mile run. He is also a member of the sprint medley relay team, which is ranked sixth, and the distance medley relay team, which is ranked first in the nation.

Counseling Director Anne Abbatecola described Rizzo as a hardworking student and praised him for his leadership skills, both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities.

“He has a great rapport with the boys on the team and is a true leader in every sense,” Abbatecola said. “He contributes to classroom discussions and especially enjoys analyzing literature and considering its relevance to himself and the world. Teachers cite his resolute desire to improve as significant in his success. Alex is also a fine science student, whose reliability and diligence are noted. He excels at hands-on experiences and experiments and goes beyond requirements to draw and verify conclusions. Alex’s leadership in the classroom is vital in all disciplines. He is a true scholar-athlete.”

Besides his dedication on the track, Rizzo has taken a challenging course load consisting of honors level and Advanced Placement classes. Outside of school, he has participated in a community service trip to Nicaragua, works as a camp counselor during the summers and volunteers for youth track clinics. He is also an avid skier and surfer.

Rizzo will attend the United States Naval Academy in the fall.
