Two Seniors Earn 10 Prestigious Art Awards
Bronxville, NY

Bronxville High School seniors Ruby Howell and Victoria Vigorito have earned multiple honors at the prestigious regional 2020 Scholastic Art & Writing awards competition. Howell won eight awards for her drawings and paintings, and Vigorito won two awards for a pen drawing and an animation.

“What makes both Ruby and Victoria special is their commitment to art,” said art teacher Courtney Alan, who added that the students’ works stood out among thousands of other student submissions. “They both find ways to pursue creative endeavors in and out of school through various jobs, such as musical posters, set design, illustrations for events and commissioned artwork."

Howell earned four Gold Keys, three Silver Keys and one honorable mention for her work, which is mostly in acrylic paint and scratchboard. She earned the Gold Key awards for her paintings, “Baby Daydream” and “Animal Cruelty,” and drawings, “Birthday Box” and “Childhood Obesity.” Howell earned her Silver Key awards for her three paintings, “Kaleidoscope,” “Quality” and “Reflections,” and earned an honorable mention award for her painting, “Baby Blue.”

“The size and detail of her ‘Baby Daydream’ work make it extremely impressive,” Alan said. “It was done in her sketchbook, and the baby in the painting is barely bigger than a paperclip. She captures a feeling of childhood with her color choices and lighting that make the painting seem magical.”

Vigorito earned an honorable mention award for her pen drawing, “Loss for Words and Emotion,” and an honorable mention award for her animation, “Thoughts in Time.”

“The pen drawing is a self-portrait with a lot of details through implied line and an advanced perspective, causing the viewer to be looking down on her,” Alan said. “She uses crosshatching to add value and interest to the work.”

Both artists are students in Alan’s Advanced Placement Art class for the second year and are working on completing a 2D Design portfolio. Howell’s investigation centers around nostalgia and memories of childhood, while Vigorito is working on an animation that combines music and movement through dance.

Presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, the Scholastic Art & Writing awards program identifies students with exceptional artistic and literary talents.
