Bronxville High School sophomore Kelly Weild is leading efforts to clean up garbage at Scout Field on May 4. As part of the “River Sweep” event, volunteers will sort and count trash to ascertain the source of garbage in the Bronx River.
“By documenting trash at the river, students hope to better understand the street-to-waterway trash connection,” said high school science teacher Justine McClellan, who played a key role in the implementation of the Bronx River research into the districtwide curriculum.
McClellan previously facilitated volunteer research efforts with her students by collaborating with the Bronx River Alliance in Project Waste Waterway and Street Trash Elimination). She and her students collected litter along an 800-meter stretch of Parkway and Palmer Avenues in Bronxville and along the Hartsdale train station.
The “River Sweep” event on May 4 will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is co-sponsored by the Bronx River Alliance and Riverkeeper.
